There is no "right way" to convert an internal combustion engine to electric power, but there are several "wrong ways". 

To avoid them, it will do no harm to:

1) subscribe to the Electric Vehicle mail list (free)
Warning!  Warning!  High volumes of email. 
I am talking 50+ messages per day.

2) read at least two books on the subject:

a) Build Your Own Electric Vehicle by Bob Brant

b)  Convert It by Michael P. Brown
